Last summer, I climbed Mt. Daimonji with my friend. The memory is still fresh and brilliant so I would like you to share the great experiences of climbing Mt. Daimonji.
Mt. Daimonji is located in Kyoto. It takes about 15 minutes by bus from Kyoto station. In Kyoto city, the bus has a flat fare so that you only need to pay 230 yen per person.
The area near Mt. Daimonji is very famous because of the infamous “Genkakuji Temple.”
In the main street to Ginkakuji Temple, there are some stores such as ice cream, souvenir, and iced drinks. However, if you are climbing, I recommend you to not buy anything in the main street before mountain climbing, because it will be an additional weight.
Even though Ginkakuji Temple is a famous tourist spot, when I went there, there were only a few people sightseeing.
If you want to travel to a place that is not so crowded, I highly recommend you to visit this place.
What is Mt,Daimonji?
Mt,Daimonji is famous for the “Gozan no okuribi” (The Mountain bonfire).
“Gozan no okuribi” is the event of “Obon”. “Obon” is a Japanese traditional event to welcome the spirits of ancestors.
The lighting of the bonfire is only done once every year and only lasts for about 15 minutes. If you have the chance, come to Kyoto during Obon (middle of August) and watch the bonfire in the mountain light up into a large Kanji symbol meaning “big”.
There are many more spots in Kyoto with different Kanji symbols written on the mountain but the Kanji symbol “big” is the most popular out of all of them.
It took about two hours to reach the top of the mountain.
During mountain climbing, I drank all of my drinks and got risks of dehydration. Luckily, my friend brought extra bottled water.
The view from the top of the mountain was awesome. My friend and I lost the words when we saw this view.
The view from here is Kyoto city.
