Journey Through Karuizawa

Karuizawa started as a summer resort in 1886 (Meiji 19), and missionary Alexander Croft Shaw, born in Canada, visited the place and admired its beautiful nature and climate.  He recommended the beautiful scenery to his family and friends, and then Karuizawa was known for a resort for summer.

1.Shiraito Falls

Shiraito Falls is a scenic spot in a national forest. The falls are 3 meters tall, but it is 70 meters wide arch.  You can actually get real close to the falls and feel the cool breeze from the falls.

The “Shiraito” was named for the countless waterfalls running down like “Shiraito” (White Thread). It is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Karuizawa, and you can enjoy the beautiful scenery just by walking 150m from the entrance.

2. Karuizawa Hoshino Area

The Karuizawa Hoshino Area is the place where artists gathered to form art-community during the Taisho era.  Therefore, this area has a number of places that will stimulate your intellectual curiosity. You can see a lot of creative architecture and works cultivated in rich nature.

In this area, you can feel comfortable breeze, the amazing sound of the river, the soft sunlight through the trees.  It is so relaxing that you can fully take a rest.

4. Karuizawa Kogen Church

Everyone can visit the Karuizawa Kogen Church. The church holds events that allow you to enjoy the four seasons events.  You can feel free to join there regardless of whether you have a faith or not.

In the Karuizawa, Christian culture has been alive since ancient times.  Karuizawa Kogen Church has been built at Taisho Era.  People freely gathered and talked at this place through weddings and various events through the four seasons. Many bonds have been nurtured here.

5. Karuizawa Hotchi Ichiba

Here you can get souvenirs limited for Karuizawa.  There are healthy desserts using soymilk, jams made from fresh local fruits, and vegetables harvested in the morning, and each product are sold at a low price.
